Eliminating Ten-Day-Advance Voter Registration Requirement

You can vote Yes or No on this ballot proposal, which would amend the New York State Constitution.

What you will see on the ballot

The proposed amendment would delete the current requirement in Article 2, § 5 that a citizen be registered to vote at least ten days before an election and would allow the Legislature to enact laws permitting a citizen to register to vote less than ten days before the election. Shall the proposed amendment be approved?

Proposal Summary

The New York State Constitution currently requires voters to be registered at least ten days before an election in order to cast their ballot. This proposal would eliminate that provision, giving the State Legislature the ability to pass new laws that allow New Yorkers more time to register to vote.

If Ballot Question #3 Passes

  • The New York State Constitution would be amended to give the State Legislature the power to pass new laws that allow New Yorkers more time to register to vote before an election, including on the day of the election.
  • Passing this proposal would not guarantee that laws will change, but it would give lawmakers the ability to pass new laws that set the registration deadline closer to or on the day of the election.
